Frederick Petrarca
Funeral services and burial were held yesterday at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville for Frederick Dominic Petrarca, 87, of Severna Park, who died of respiratory failure July 19 at the Household of Angels Assisting Living after a six-month illness.
Born May 1, 1920, in Baltimore, the only son of the late Umberto and Pierina Petrarca, Mr. Petrarca served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II, beginning on Jan. 14, 1942.
After being trained in Morse Code, he was assigned to the American Volunteer Group as a radio operator and was promoted to staff sergeant with the 23rd Fighter Group, a division of the Flying Tigers.
After the war, he founded Custom Countertops in the early 1950s, which has remained a family business. He was also once listed in "Maryland's Who's Who" for his work.
His interests included fishing and playing cards.
Surviving are his three daughters, Linda Schafer of Pasadena, Dale Hanlon of St. Michaels and Barbara Hardesty of Boulder, Colo.; one son, Frederick W. Petrarca of Pasadena; one sister, Louise Corbin of Baltimore; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was the former spouse of the late May Elizabeth Petrarca, who died in 2001; and father of the late Nancy J. Petrarca and Beth A. Pritchard, who both died in 2005.
