Frederick Charles Gloss, age 77 of Severna Park, Maryland, passed away on September 2 nd in his home overlooking Cattail Creek, his beloved Chesapeake Bay. Fred, lovingly referred to by his family as "Freddy" was born to the late Clara Ulrike and Kenneth Edwin Gloss of Colorado Springs, Colorado on May 18, 1945, and had three brothers and one sister.  Fred is survived by his wife Joy, daughter Jayme, grandchildren Aya, Cavan, and Seamus, sister Kathy, brothers Larry and Pete, and numerous nephews, nieces, great nieces, and great-nephews. Fred was preceded in death by his brother Kenny.

Everyone who met Fred knew immediately that he had a zest for life. Always happy, with a bigger-than-life presence, a gigantic heart, and an unbounded wit. Fred immediately got into people's hearts, would light up a room, and brought joy to those around him. From an early age, Fred lived deep and sucked the marrow of life: he rode horses and bailed hay on his family's ranch in the Tarryall Valley of Colorado and then ventured to California at Whittier College for his education. Following graduation, he answered President Kennedy's call to promote greater peace and understanding in the world by joining the United States Peace Corps and serving the people of Micronesia and the world. After returning to the United States, he became part of the leadership of the Peace Corp during the Carter administration where his intuitive skills of crisis management excelled removing Peace Corps Volunteers in harm's way. Fred developed a love for the ocean while studying in California and during his service as a peace corps volunteer. These events inspired him to become an avid sailor where he raced in the Hawaiian Islands, and Bermuda and explored the world finally embracing his beloved Chesapeake.

Fred was a proud father and committed himself to Jayme at a very young age. Fred introduced Jayme to sports, ranch life, and horses. He was devoted as a soccer coach, and they shared a lifelong passion for all things horses. Fred reveled in Jayme's motherhood and his three grandchildren. He was thrilled they shared his love of flowers and continued the legacies of farm life, sports, soccer, and horses.

For decades, Fred led a successful career as CEO of a Retained Executive Search Firm (FGI), finding talented people to become the leaders of prominent national and international organizations. However, if you looked for him you were most likely to find him naturally networking, on one of his boats, spending time with friends, tending to his garden, or cheering on horses at a nearby steeplechase. Since 2005, you could most reliably find Fred next to his beloved wife Joy who he met serendipitously in Annapolis while he was living on his boat. Fittingly, they were married aboard a cruise ship bound for the Caribbean surrounded by family and friends. Together they loved yachting, vacationing in SOBE, visiting with his daughter and grandchildren, and spending quality time with Joy's parents, family, and friends.  You would also find them chatting with their vast community of sailing friends at the Annapolis Yacht Club, and their favorite local second kitchen-restaurant Cafe Mezzanotte.

As a testament to his role as a leader and mentor to many family members, friends, and local community residents, countless others turned to Fred for both professional and personal advice / always giving generously.  Despite difficult years of poor health, Fred maintained an optimistic and happy spirit. Through acts of service to his family, friends, and the world, Fred taught us all to live life with joy and optimism despite any challenge. Joy, family, and friends know that Freddy is sailing along a course with fair winds and calm seas.  Forever the navigator to guide us through the stormy waters of life.
