Francis "Bill" Young, 90, a long time resident of Round Bay and Anne Arundel County passed away peacefully on February 20 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center.
Bill was born on November 1, 1919, in Baltimore and graduated from Baltimore Polytechnical Institute and Strayer Business College.
As a Technical Sergeant, Bill was assigned to General Bradley's 12th U. S. Army Group in the European Theater of Operations from 1943 -1945. Attached to the 2nd British Army, 21st British Army Group, his assignment was to provide liaison information for the 21st and 12th Army Groups subsequent to "D-Day". He received the distinguished Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service in connection with this military operation and was awarded campaign medals for Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.
Following his active military duty, Bill had a distinguished working career as a Civil Engineer for the Facility Engineering Department at Fort George Meade retiring as Deputy Director. He continued his military service as an Army Reservist and retired with the rank of Major. Not ready to fully retire, Bill worked for Severn School for an additional 10 years as Director of Buildings and Grounds.
In 2004, Bill received Charter Membership, a medal and Certificate of Appreciation from the United States Committee for the Battle of Normandy Memorial Museum.
Bill was an avid fisherman and birdwatcher who had an enduring passion for the Severn River, Eastern Shore and Chesapeake Bay. In his youth as a Boy Scout he spent his summers at Camp Linstead. It was here that he envisioned building a home and future on the shores of the Severn River. In 1955 his lifelong dream was fulfilled.
Bill was the beloved husband of the late Betty Allen Lucy Young. They were married sixty three years and are survived by their four children, Barbara Domingue of Fitzwilliam, NH, Kirk Young, Easton, MD, Ann Hall, Severna Park, MD, and Allen Young, Virginia Beach, VA. Bill and Betty are blessed with seven grandchildren, Jason and Ryan Elliott, James, Michael and Kristine Hall, Adam and Evan Young and four great grandchildren. Bill was a loving and loyal husband, father, friend, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather who will be greatly missed.
Family members will honor his life at a private Memorial Service to be held at the Crownsville Veterans Cemetery at a later date. Contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401.
