Francis I. Codd, M.D., 95, a resident of Linstead on the Severn, passed away of old age on October 27, 2015 at the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (formerly North Arundel Hospital). He was predeceased by his wife, Florence Codd (nee Weaver), in 2008.
Dr. Codd ("Paddy") was the youngest of four children. His sister, Mary Catherine Codd, and brothers, Joseph Austin Codd and John Codd, are deceased. He is survived by his three sons, F. Nicholas Codd (Joe), Patrick J. Codd (Barb) and Thomas C. Codd (Downie), and his six grandchildren, Caitlin Perunovich, Grace Cassilly, Christopher Codd, Colleen Schott, Patrick F. Codd, and Joseph Codd, all of the Severna Park area.
He was born unto John Nicholas Codd and Edith Codd (nee Brady) on September 16, 1920 in Baltimore, and was raised in Severna Park, Maryland. He began his education at the then two-room Severna Park Grammar School (under the tutelage of Miss Moss), and attended St. Mary's Elementary School in Annapolis, Loyola High School, and Calvert Hall College. He went on to the University of Maryland Pharmacy School, while working briefly for the F.B.I. in the crime lab, and he then attended and graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1946. He served in the U.S. Navy at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and as a ship's doctor.
After stints with (among other places) the Volunteers of America and St. Agnes Hospital, Dr. Codd opened his general practice in the early 1950s in his home in Linstead. In 1955, he moved his office to its current location on Ritchie Highway in Severna Park, where he continued his medical practice for the next sixty years (up until just weeks before he died). Dr. Codd, whose longevity seemed to be related to his daily intake of Giant Food brand chocolate milk ("with a good date on it"), Entenmann's Fudge Iced Golden Cake, and an occasional chocolate milk shake, outlived most of his contemporaries.
Dr. Codd was devoted to his family and to his patients. He was kind, hard-working and humble. He lived to see his grandchildren grow up and was blessed to see the four older ones happily marry. He led a tranquil, honorable life.
It is with great sadness that his patients are hereby advised that his office is now officially closed. The family thanks his medical assistants and nurses over the years, especially his medical assistant for the past 23 years, Mary Anne Stoner.
He was a life-time member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Severna Park. He was married in the original St. John's Church on Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard, which was a mission church at the time. As a young child, he and his childhood friend, the late Fordy Slavin, would play the violin at the Christmas Eve mass there. Later, Dr. Codd became one of the incorporators for the current St. John the Evangelist Church and School on Ritchie Highway, across from his office. He was always fond of the nuns at St. John's and had a good rapport with the priests assigned there over the years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church. A reception will follow in the Gathering Space. Inurnment will be private.
