Floyd Ray Metzger, 86, of Severna Park, died of cancer Feb. 8 at his home after a brief illness.

Born March 27, 1919, in Mount Vernon, S.D., where he graduated from Mount Vernon High School, Mr. Metzger graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D., in 1941 with a bachelor of arts degree.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the 10th Reconnaissance Group, 9th Air Corps, in the European Theatre from 1943 to 1946. After his discharge, he worked for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation on the Columbian Basin Project from 1946 to 1948.

In 1961 he received his master of education degree from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion. In 1963 he moved his family to Severna Park where he was a guidance counselor at Severna Park from 1963 to 1978. Following retirement, he volunteered for many years with Habitat for Humanity.

Surviving are his wife, Georgia Rose Metzger, whom he married in 1943; his daughters, Gayle E. Girouard of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Vicki K. Metzger of Bowie; and one granddaughter.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Asbury United Methodist Church, 78 Church Road, Arnold. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
