Evelyn Powers Andreatta, aged 86, went home to be with the Lord early in the morning June 24, 2014 surrounded by family.
The daughter of Cornelius and May Powers, Evelyn was born October 17, 1927, in Sedley, VA. She grew up in the midst of the Great Depression in very modest surroundings with six siblings but never felt she was lacking for anything. Evelyn shared many fond memories of frog hunting and fishing with "Daddy," swimming in the mill pond, and eating "Mama's" home cooking that was always enough for her family and any neighbors needing a meal. As a teenager, Evelyn enjoyed horseback riding and playing softball. Evelyn graduated from her small high school and became a licensed practical nurse through training at Leigh Memorial Hospital in Norfolk, VA. She was awarded a scholarship and went on to become a registered nurse at King's Daughters Hospital in Portsmouth, VA, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude.
Evelyn met James Andreatta, "Andy," at a New Year's Eve party in Virginia and they were married on November 17, 1951, after he graduated college and she completed nurses training. Andy graduated from the University of Virginia as an electronics engineer and was employed by Westinghouse. This job moved them to Maryland where they spent most of their 62 years of marriage.
Through the years, Evelyn devoted herself to the care and upbringing of their 3 children and eventually returned to part-time nursing. She provided a warm and nurturing home for her family to grow and thrive. Evelyn enjoyed gardening and had a special talent growing flowers. She also enjoyed embroidery, baking, music and was an avid Orioles fan.
Evelyn's survivors include a son, Ron Andreatta (Darlene), a retired computer software engineer living in Iowa, another son, Chuck Andreatta (Linda), a financial analyst for the Treasury Department living in Washington, DC, and a daughter, Nancy Andreatta Lim (Allen), a physical therapist living in Arnold, MD. She is also survived by her husband, Jim, and 2 grandsons and 4 granddaughters.
