Eugene Callan Harvey, Sr., 87, a resident of Severna Park since 1970, passed away at his home on October 13, 2014 after a long battle with cancer.

Eugene was born to his parents, John and Henrietta Harvey on December 3, 1926 in an area of Baltimore known as "Pigtown", where he was raised. He attended St. Peter's Catholic School prior to Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. Eugene left "Poly" in December 1944 to enlist in the U.S. Navy. Upon returning from the war, he graduated with his class in February 1947. He later graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Certificate in Civil Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, graduating with Honors. He was elected to Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and was an active member of the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association, where he served two terms as president.

Mr. Harvey started his career as a draftsman with the Baltimore City Water Bureau. He worked for State Roads (Bridge Division), R. T. Regester Consulting Engineers, Anne Arundel Sanitary Commission, and the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works, his last eight years with the Department as Chief Engineer. He joined the firm of John E. Harms, Jr. and Associates in 1976 and retired as Senior Vice President in April 1992. Active in the engineering community, he was elected fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, was a life member of the American Water Works Association; and was elected fellow of the American Consulting Engineers Council. In addition, he was active with the American Public Works Association, the Water Pollution Control Association, and the Society of American Military Engineers. He served in the Naval Reserves for twelve years.

Eugene was a member of the Glen Burnie Urban Renewal Advisory Board and the Anne Arundel County Trade Council/Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Board for the Providence Center for the Developmentally Disabled. He, too, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, the Engineer's Club in Baltimore, and the Hopkins Club. He was a very active member of the AOH Div 1 in Catonsville.

Mr. Harvey loved traveling to Europe, especially to his ancestors' home in Ireland. He was a student of History and Math and loved to read. He enjoyed tending to his rose garden and spending time with his family.

Eugene is survived by his children, James Harvey (Laura) of Kernersville, NC; Sharon Harvey (Phil Auth) of Arnold, MD; Patrick Harvey of Shadyside, MD; Maggie Harvey of Severna Park; as well as, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred Dantoni Harvey; his son, Eugene C. Harvey, Jr.; and his brother, John T. Harvey.

Friends may visit on Friday October 17, 2014 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Barranco & Sons, P.A Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy. Severna Park, MD 21146 . A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday October 18, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Hwy. Severna Park, MD 21146. Interment at the MD Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Providence Center, 930 Point Pleasant Road Glen Burnie, MD 21060.
