Ethel Kern Holtz, 90, of Carmel, Ind., died Sept. 18 of natural causes at the Arnold home of her daughter.

Born to the late Phillip and Barbara Wicks Kern in Queens, N.Y., on Sept. 26, 1915, Mrs. Holtz was an accomplished artist and apprenticed as a photographer with Gladys Townsend Nothlocker in New York. Blindness ended this career, but presented her with the opportunity to befriend Helen Keller and to meet Annie Sullivan, Miss Keller's teacher.

Mrs. Holtz worked for the Avon Co. for more than 40 years, winning many awards as one of Avon's top regional sales representatives.

On June 19, 1938, she married Charles H. Holtz who died March 30, 1980. She was also predeceased by two sons, John Henry Holtz and Charles Kern Holtz, and one sister, Ruth Lauer.

She is survived by one son, Gregory Kern Holtz of Jackson, Ala.; two daughters, Christine Kern Cross of Carmel and Cynthia Kern Turner of Arnold; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, where the funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be at 11 a.m. at Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge.
