Esther Lucille Stubberfield, 89, of Severna Park, died Aug. 5 at Community Hospice House in Merrimack, N.H., after a brief illness.
The daughter of the late Will and Jessie Kinch Myrtle Halnon, Mrs. Stubberfield was born Aug. 13, 1914, in Platteville, Wis., and reared in Vincennes, Ind., and Kalamazoo, Mich. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1935 from Western Michigan University, earning a bachelor's degree in English. She did postgraduate work at the University of Michigan in language arts.
Mrs. Stubberfield taught language arts in the Kalamazoo public school system until 1939.
She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi national education society, the Academy Sorority and the Golden Association.
Her interests included traveling to England and Ireland, playing bridge, dancing, reading, writing poetry and teaching.
In 1939 she married her college sweetheart, Lavern Stubberfield, who died in 1999.
Surviving are one son, Lee Stubberfield of Severna Park; one daughter, Susan Byrant of Nashua, N.H.; one brother, William Halnon of Alexandria, Va.; and one granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Burial will be private.
