Ernest Rorapaugh Fowler, 70, of Annapolis, died of complications of cancer April 13 at Chesapeake Hospice House in Linthicum after a two-year illness.

Mr. Fowler was born March 26, 1935, and raised in Annapolis. He also lived on the Eastern Shore and Cape Cod, Mass., where he won an award from the Barnstable Historical Society for a preservation project undertaken in 1997. He was a self-employed general contractor whose firm was E.R. Fowler and Sons.

Mr. Fowler was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Annapolis. He enjoyed making stained glass, smoking his pipe and playing board games.

Surviving are his wife, Betty L. Rutter Fowler; five children, Lucinda Fowler of Easton, Larry Fowler of Annapolis, Carol Louise McFarlane of Holland, Mich., Andrew Fowler of Palisades, N.Y., and Donald S. Fowler of Greensboro in Caroline County; four stepchildren, Robert A. King Jr. of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, Laura E. Williams of Cockeysville, Randall A. King of Bowie and Elisebeth Jo Allen of Centreville; his mother, Ernestine Fowler of St. Paul, Minn.; one brother, David Fowler of Annapolis; two sisters, Ellen Milos and Jan Armentrout of St. Paul; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1300 West St., Annapolis. Burial will be private.
