In remembrance of Erma Striner (11/18/22-1/12/16)
In the early morning of Tuesday, January 12, 2016, Erma Steinert Striner passed away peacefully at home at the age of 93 after a long illness.
Born on November 18, 1922 in Bayonne, New Jersey to Saul Steinert and Nettie Doyne Steinert, Erma was a lover of reading and the arts.
She graduated valedictorian from Horace Mann [Middle] School and later majored in Art and French at Douglass College in New Brunswick. In the early part of her career, Erma taught middle school art to students in New Jersey. Her former marriage to Herbert Striner led her to the Washington DC area where she raised her two children, Richard Alan Striner and Deborah Striner Hartten.
Erma spent the majority of her adult life in downtown DC where she thoroughly explored and embraced all the city had to offer from museums, landmarks, and restaurants. A 21-year Federal Government employee at GSA, Erma also worked at AIA Research Corporation and authored a study in college housing for the National Endowment for the Arts and taught interior design at the University of Maryland. In her later work years, she led philanthropic research and fundraising for The Wilderness Society.
Deeply committed to her love of family and desire to be by the water, Erma spent her final years in Annapolis, MD. Erma embraced design in all aspects of her life from her home to her memorable fashion flair of hats and high heels. The quintessential "fashionista", she embodied a joie de vivre!
In addition to her children, Rick and Deborah, she leaves behind her granddaughters Allyson Hartten and Sommer Striner, and daughter-in-law Sara Striner.
Cheers, Erma! May you rest in peace.
A Memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, January 17, 2016 from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park, MD 21146.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation made in memory of Erma Striner to the
Architecture Graduate Scholarship Fund at the University of Maryland
. This will honor Erma's love of design and architecture and her time teaching interior design at the University of Maryland.
