Erica Ruth Sciance, of Arnold, Maryland died of cancer at home surrounded by her family on May 16, 2009.
She was born Erica Ruth Sciance on May 3, 1965 in Norman, Oklahoma. As a child she lived in Oklahoma, Texas, France and Delaware. She has lived in Arnold since 1988.
Ms. Sciance graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1987 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. She worked as an engineer and supercomputer policy specialist for the Department of Defense. She was the NSA Liaison to the Department of State Office of Foreign Missions from 1997 until 1999, when she left to work in the private sector. From 1998 until 2008 she worked for a number of Washington-area defense contractors providing project management and systems engineering expertise.
Ms. Sciance was an active member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park, MD. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, politics, music, and reading. She most enjoyed spending time with her children and with her family.
Ms. Sciance is survived by her husband, Thomas W. Decker, whom she married in 1992; her sons, Phillip A. Decker, David H. Decker, Christopher T. Decker, and George F. Decker all of the home in Arnold, MD; her parents, Dr. C. Thomas and Anita R. Sciance of Austin, TX; her brothers, Steven A. Sciance and Frederick S. Sciance of Troy, MI, and Thomas W. Sciance of Norfolk, VA; her nieces, Bronwyn R. Sciance of Virginia Beach, VA, Kristine R. Hall of Charlottsville, VA and Nicole E. Adams of Chester, MD; and her nephews, Jonathan T. Sciance of Norfolk, VA and Timothy R. Hall of Chesapeake Beach, MD.
The family will welcome friends and family on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home. Funeral services will be offered at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park, MD on Thursday at 11:00am. The interment will be at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville, MD.
