IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Emory E.
Giddens
October 2, 1939 – January 30, 2025
Emory Eugene Giddens, 85, passed away peacefully at home on January 30, 2025, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on October 2, 1939, in Bushnell, Florida, Emory lived a life of dedication, service, and love.
He was a proud graduate of Fernandina Beach High School, Class of 1957, and enjoyed attending his high school reunions over the years. After high school, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Sports Education from Florida State University, where he also competed in track and field.
Following college, Emory (Gene) served four and a half years in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He graduated from Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Newport, Rhode Island, earning his commission as a Lieutenant. He was stationed aboard the USS Henrico (APA-45), playing a critical role in naval operations during the war in Vietnam, and later received an honorable discharge while serving at the Indian Head Naval Propellant Plant in Maryland.
After his military service, Gene made Maryland his home and embarked on a distinguished career with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC). Over the course of his career, he played an integral role in planning and development, ultimately retiring as Deputy Director of Montgomery County. While working full-time, he also pursued higher education, earning a master's degree in education from Bowie State University.
A lifelong fitness enthusiast, Gene believed in staying active and worked out regularly well into his later years. He was devoted to his family and adored his grandchildren. Known to many as "The Fox," his quick wit and sharp sense of humor made him unforgettable.
He was a 40-year resident of Shipley's Choice and was an active member of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Retirement Association. He loved his pets, especially his beloved dogs, Meatball and Snuggles.
Gene is survived by his loving wife, Penny Giddens; his daughters, Buffy Giddens and Channing Hawken; and his cherished grandchildren, Camden, Brianna, and Travis Hawken. He was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Woodall of Longwood, Florida.
A private funeral service with military honors will be held at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. At a future date, an open house of remembrance for family and friends will take place to celebrate Gene's life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Hospice of the Chesapeake or the Anne Arundel County SPCA, two organizations close to his heart.
Emory's legacy is one of service, strength, and devotion—to his country, his career, and most of all, his family. His wisdom, humor, and unwavering spirit will never be forgotten.
