Emma Lillian Hedges, 90, of Annapolis, died of pneumonia on December 27,2007 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Born in Baltimore in 1917 to Lillian Walker Thau and Robert Edmund Thau, she was educated at Eastern High School and Baltimore City College. While wintering in Baltimore, she summered in Severna Park with her family before residing permanently in Severna
Park for many years.
She and her husband, the late William E. Hedges, lived briefly in Naples, New York before moving permanently to Annapolis.
She resided at the Heritage Harbor Rehabilitation and Convalescent Center for the
past six years. A skilled seamstress and knitter, she made many of her outfits in addition to beautiful sweaters for her daughter and granddaughters and caps for newborn infants.
A homemaker for most of her life, she was an avid reader who also loved travel, music and flowers. She loved greeting cards and maintained a correspondence with
family and friends throughout the world.
A life-long student of the German language and culture, she worked for many years in the Department of Foreign Languages at the United States Naval Academy where
her work was always judged outstanding. She was also a Notary Public.
A member of the Board of Directors of the Edelweiss Club of Baltimore, where she served as Secretary and Historian, she especially enjoyed traveling with the members to Germany and to other countries in Europe.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Annapolis.
She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Hedges Bassford, two granddaughters and five great grandchildren.
Private Christian funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 2,2008 at the Barranco Funeral Home in Severna Park with internment at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery.
