Funeral services were held earlier today at the Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home with burial in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville for Emery Conway Smith, 82, a resident of the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in St. Mary's County since September 2007 and formerly of Annapolis, who died of natural causes Nov. 19 after a lengthy illness.
Born Aug. 11, 1925, in Charlottesville, Va., Mr. Smith served in the Army Air Force as a private 1st class during World War II in the European Theater of Operations.
Mr. Smith retired in 1983 after more than 30 years of service working as a telephone technician for the former Bell Telephone Co. in the Washington, D.C., area.
He was a member of a Masonic Lodge and the Veterans of Foreign War, both in the Washington, D.C., area. His interests included tinkering with electronics, working on home projects and travel, especially to the Hawaiian Islands.
In 1951 he married Vera Marie Smith, who died in October 2006. Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
