Elsie Monk
Elsie Bright Monk, 95, a 27-year resident of Cape St. Claire, died of heart failure Sept. 28 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore after a two-year illness.
Born April 15, 1909, in Keyser, W.Va., Mrs. Monk graduated from Potomac State College in 1929, where she played on the basketball team and was the oldest surviving alumna. She also took medical courses in the 1930s in Washington, D.C.
She was an administrative assistant in the Navy from 1942 to 1946 and for the Army from 1950 until her retirement from Fort McNair in Washington in 1969. She received several commendations for her work as a typist and assistant.
A rare O-negative blood type, she was a regular Red Cross blood donor for more than 50 years.
In 1935 she married Daniel Rudolf Monk, who died March 17, 1995. She was the sister of the late Clark, Ray and Tricksie Bright, J. M. Bright Jr., Carrie Bright Nowatsky, Madlyn Bright Rizer and Elizabeth Allen.
Surviving are three sons, Daniel B. Monk of Arlington, Va., Dr. Richard C. Monk of Towson and Donald M. Monk of Silver Spring; one daughter, Nancy Ellen Monk Black of Longwood, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grand-
children; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m today and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, where services will be at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville.
