The Family of Elaine B McCarthy of Severna Park, MD is saddened to announce that she passed away suddenly at her home on October 29, 2009.
Elaine was a woman of great grace and dignity, who continued to pursue a career of teaching through out her life.
Born in Havertown PA in 1925, she went to Haverford High School and received a Bachelor of Arts from the Philadelphia University of the Arts in 1947. She went on to teach art in Pennsylvania's Lower Marion School District from 1947 to 1952. During this time she met and was courted by her future husband Cooper Reid McCarthy of Devon, PA.
She married Cooper in 1952 and together, they created a family of 3 sons and a daughter. The family lived in Camden SC, Little Silver, NJ and Severna Park Md.
Elaine returned to her teaching career in 1970 at the Little Silver NJ school district. In 1974 upon her move to Maryland, learned sign language and taught hearing impaired children in the Anne Arundel School district until her retirement in 1993. She touched the lives of many children and many former students stayed in touch with her throughout her life.
Upon retirement she devoted her time to her friends, children and grandchildren. She remained active in her church, St. Martin's in-the-Field throughout her life and actively participated in a variety of associations including Omni Foundation and the American Association of University Woman until her death.
Throughout her life Elaine continued to practice her true gift of artistry; providing myriad works for her Church, friends and family.
Elaine is remembered by all those who knew her as a warm friend, devoted sister, kind aunt, and caring mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her sister and brother –in-law, Betty & Bill Griffin of Chestertown, MD and their two children, Bill and Maris; four children, their spouses and six grandchildren; Reid & Caroline McCarthy and her grandchildren Allison, Susan and Catherine of Doylestown, PA; Curtis McCarthy of Glen Burnie, MD; Alisa & Don Corbett of Ontario, Canada; and, Tysen & Julie McCarthy and her grandchildren Connor, Patrick, and R.Cooper of Brighton, MI.
Her memorial service is scheduled for Friday, Nov 6, 1:30pm at St Martins-in-the-Field Episcopal Church, 375 Benfield Rd, Severna Park, MD 21146. Arrangements made by Barranco & Sons, P.A.
