Edward Joseph McCafferty of Severna Park, Maryland died peacefully Friday January 23, 2015 at his son's home surrounded by family. He was 75 years old and is survived by four children, Edward (Lisa) McCafferty of South Riding, VA, Kenneth (Camille) of Port Republic, MD, Brendan of Severna Park, MD and Katherine Meehan (Patrick) of Red Bank, NJ.  He is also survived by four grandchildren Christopher, Owen, Madeleine and Patrick, as well as his nieces, nephews and their spouses, children and grandchildren as well by three grand dogs.  He is predeceased by his parents and two sisters.

Ed was born and raised in southwest Philadelphia where he was an altar boy and standout point guard for the West Catholic Burrs, where he once played against Wilt Chamberlain.  He was also a key contributor to the track team as an accomplished hurdler.  He graduated from the University of Notre Dame and The University of Maryland School of Law and was a career public servant, working for over 40 years as an attorney for the Department of Veteran's Affairs.  He was an exemplary, sportsmanship-focused coach for many years in the Green Hornets youth athletic program, where he coached all of his children and many, many Severna Park youth over two decades.

He was an avid reader of books ranging from subjects as diverse as eastern philosophy, science fiction, historical novels and the complete Robert B. Parker Spencer series.  He was a self-taught sailor, dog lover and backyard wildlife caretaker.  He will be remembered for his love of family, kind nature, patience and quick wit.

Friends may visit on Saturday, January 31, 2015 from 10:00am until 12 noon at the Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy. Severna Park, MD 21146.  A funeral service will be held at noon in the funeral home chapel.  Burial will be private.
