Edward Pete Macknovitz,100, died peacefully on September 24, 2021 at his home in Severna Park, MD. Ed was born in Baltimore, MD on May 10, 1921 to the late Piusas & Anna Macknovitz. He grew up in Curtis Bay & it was there that he met the love of his life, Aline Dawidowicz. They married in 1942 & had 3 children.
Ed served in WWII as a Corporal Field Operator for the US Army. His unit landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day+2. During combat in Germany, Ed risked his life running through enemy fire to help save his severely wounded friend. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroism. They later served together to help fight The Battle of the Bulge. In 1957 Ed moved his family to Severna Park, MD. He was employed at the US Naval Academy as a Planner & Estimator until his retirement.
Family and friends were the most important part of life for Ed. He loved sharing his interests with them by participating in golfing, bowling, dancing at Senior Centers & the Democratic Club, snowbirding with Aline in Florida, watching the Ravens & Orioles, fishing, crabbing & eating the largest "grandad crab" at family crab feasts.
In addition to his parents, Ed is preceded in death by his wife Aline, sister Mildred Seth & brother Roland Macknovitz. He is survived by his children Nancy (Leonard) Pearce, Marlene (Walter) Burkett, & Brian (Ann) Macknovitz. Ed was a loving grandfather to Leonard (Nicole) Pearce, Krista (Davey) Jones, Ted Macknovitz, & great grandfather to Ethan & Maddox Pearce & Jack Jones. Ed was also fortunate to have step grandchildren Lori (Robert) George, Sherri (Britton) Miller, Mark Burkett, David Burkett, 9 step great-grandchildren & 5 step great-great grandchildren. In addition, he leaves behind his many nieces, nephews & friends. Ed will always be remembered for his kindness, generosity & warm sense of humor towards everyone he met. He was a true example of "The Greatest Generation" & will be greatly missed.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at Barranco Severna Park Funeral Home & Cremation Care, P.A, 495 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park, MD, 21146 on Wednesday, October 6 th from 4-7 pm.
A private memorial mass will be celebrated at St John the Evangelist Church, 689 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park, MD Thursday Oct 7 th at 11:00 am.
