Ed was born June 14th, 1929 – Flag Day – and truly loved his country. Born in Brooklyn N.Y. to John Steven Haugh and MaryEllen (nee Sullivan) Haugh, he was the 9thth of 13 children. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the Army just months before the end of World War II and served his country a total of 21 years, a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He served in the Corps of Engineers and retired a Sergeant First Class E-7 in 1968. His last duty station was Ft. Belvoir, Virginia where he served as an Instructor.
Married since 1951 to his loving wife Ruby Lee (Rowe) Haugh, together they raised four children: Judy, Amy, Diana and Eddie. The family lived in Germany, Texas, Kentucky and Virginia while Sgt. Haugh was active military. Upon retirement from the U.S. Army, Ed began working for the AB&W Transit Company (which later merged into Metro) as a bus driver. He retired from Metro after 20 years and was proud of his safe driving record and service to his passengers. He and Ruby lived in Alexandria, Virginia for 47 years before recently moving to Maryland for health reasons to live with their son and his family.
Ed loved family and he inspired everyone who knew him to understand and embrace that value. He welcomed extended family into his own family without reservation. Throughout his life he made many trips back to New York to visit his parents and after they passed, he continued his trips—wherever they took him—to see brothers, sisters, his many nieces and nephews, and extended family. He tried to make it to every family event that he was invited to attend, and mostly succeeded. Everyone knew "Uncle Eddie". His last trip for a large family gathering was in May 2014 for his niece's wedding in Brooklyn, NY. He was known for always having his camera ready to capture a moment and document family events with pictures. He loved to share his photos with everyone.
"Uncle Eddie" was a favorite among his nieces & nephews. He was an engaged grandfather to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spent many hours at sporting events, concerts and Grandparent's Days with them. He traveled frequently to visit his children, wherever they were living, thinking nothing of driving days to get there.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruby; son Edward and his wife Patricia; daughters Judy Winters and her husband Jack; Amy Leahy and her husband Michael; Diana Greenhalgh and her husband Ronald; nine grandchildren; 10 great grand-children. Ed also embraced as part of the family tree other grandchildren and great-grandchildren who entered the family through the marriage of his children or grandchildren. His love of family knew no bounds.
Ed was happiest when he was with people. He never met a stranger, making friends everywhere he went. He was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.
