Edgar Strong Freeman III, 77, of Severna Park, died of cancer May 30 at his daughter's home in Pasadena after a short illness.

Born in Severna Park on June 25, 1928, Mr. Freeman attended Severna Park Elementary School and Charlotte Hall military school. He served in the Navy from 1946 to 1951 as an engineman fireman and as a ship's baker. He received World War II and Korean War medals.

He was a life member of Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Department in Severna Park for the past 63 years, joining when he was just 14 years old. He was past president of the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firefighters Association and public address system chairman of the Maryland State Firemen's Association. He was a member of the Glen Burnie Moose Lodge, Severna Park American Legion Post 175 and the Ocean City Elks Lodge. He worked as a truck driver.

His interests included fishing, NASCAR, watching golf, working in his garage, feeding birds and spending time at his home in Ocean City.

In addition to his wife, Adelaide M. Freeman, he is survived by one son, Peter S. Freeman of Severna Park; three daughters, Robin A. Church of Crownsville, Phyllis M. Norton of Pasadena and Gail L. Guthrie of Pasadena; one brother, R. Walker Freeman of Glen Burnie; and 10 grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, where a funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday. He will be buried with fire department honors at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 1122 Sunrise Beach Road in Crownsville.
