Douglas J. Hughes, 73, of Severna Park, died of natural causes Oct. 6 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a sudden illness.
Mr. Hughes was the former mayor and police commissioner of Fenwick Island, Del. He was a self-employed marketing consultant for the electronics industry.
Born Jan. 19, 1932, in Utica, N.Y., he was reared in Clinton, N.Y. He also lived in Key West, Fla., where he was stationed while serving in the Navy during the Korean War. His interests included dogs, especially collies and shelties.
His wife, Nancy Ann Frey Hughes, died in 2002.
Surviving are one son, Douglas John Hughes of Severna Park; one sister, Lois Barnes of Anderson, S.C.; and two grandchildren.
Services and burial at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville are private. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA of Anne Arundel County, 1815 Bay Ridge Ave., Annapolis, MD 21403.
