IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy Romaine
Towers
June 13, 1938 – May 11, 2021
Romaine Towers, daughter of Robert Burkett Towers and Myrtle Hiltner Towers, was born in Baltimore, MD on June 13, 1938 and passed away quietly, with family members present, at AAMC on May 11, 2021 after a brief illness.
Raised and schooled in Baltimore until the family moved to Arnold, MD in 1953, where she enrolled and graduated from Annapolis High School. She then began her lifetime career in the insurance industry, joining the Annapolis regional center of Nationwide Insurance where she rose through the ranks and, along the way, developed a keen interest of issues of concern to women active in the industry. Ultimately she was installed as President of the then nearly 30K- member National Association of Insurance Women at their 1993 convention in Vancouver, B.C.
Romaine had a lifetime interest in music and her church. She was part of the Severnaders vocal group from its inception, and a long time singer with the Pasadena UMC choir and the Annapolis Chorale. She was an active supporter of the Annapolis Symphony with a strong preference for her Balcony seat and the Colonial Players -- front row seating please!
Through her Methodist affiliation she became an active supporter of Susanna Wesley House in Baltimore helping women with children and limited resources to regain their lives. She served actively for many years as an officer of SWH.
A knowledgeable and steady supporter of the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens (and their predecessors), Romaine, like most Baltimoreans at the time, was an avid duckpin bowler. She enjoyed traveling with friends and family to many places, including to Oberammergau, Germany for the every ten year performance of the Passion Play, to Ireland, Scotland and Italy and to Russia, from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Above all she enjoyed her annual two week vacation with friends and family in an Ocean City boardwalk cottage at 13 th Street and for being the first person every day to plant her umbrella at the best spot on the beach!
Perhaps encouraged by her brother, Romaine also had a penchant for snazzy cars, including a turquoise and white '55 Chevy convertible and several Volvos including the iconic Model 544 and the sporty P-1800.
Romaine was predeceased by her parents and is survived by her brother Robert George Towers and his wife, Sieghild Sloan of Annapolis; two nephews, Scott Taylor Towers of West River, and Francis Burkett Towers of Millersville and one niece, Elizabeth Ridout Towers Takesian of Annapolis; six grand nephews, Benjamin Towers (Easton, MD), Griffin Towers (Tahoe City, CA), Joseph Towers and Matthew Towers (Millersville), Zachary and Samuel Takesian (Annapolis); and two children of grand-nephew Benjamin and wife Kathryn, Everett and Madelyn. Also, surviving are the children of Sieghild, Heike Sloan (Glen Burnie) and Davin Sloan and daughter Ella (Cape St. Claire).
