Dorothy Kutz, 91, of Seaford DE, died 16 Jan 2014 at Heart Homes, Annapolis, MD. Born in Newport Township, PA in May of 1922, she served on active duty with the Navy Nurse Corps during WWII. After leaving the Navy Reserve in 1954, she married Narcy Kutz and worked at South Baltimore General Hospital until 1960. Their first date was squirrel hunting! It was always a tossup as to who got more!! They lived in Pasadena and Arnold for a combined total of more than 20 years with brief periods in Mt. Airy, Nanticoke and Chincoteague. She is survived by daughters Nancy (Annapolis) and Gerry (DC).
Married for over 53 years they shared a passion for building homes from Pasadena, MD, to Chincoteague, VA, to St. Augustine, FL; traveling in their Airstream; everything about the Southwest and the Eastern Shore; and anything to do with the beach, surf fishing and seashell hunting. No matter the year or location, her eyes would always perk up at the offer of crab cakes.
True to the period, she was a talented with the needle and thread, sewing everything from children's clothes and draperies, crewel and needlepoint work. She was also a great cook and baker always pushing food past the 'I'm full limit'; she hated leftovers! She consumed mystery novels, crossword puzzles, and word searches at a dizzying pace.
She was a charter member of the "Women in Military Service for America", being one of the first women to place her service record on file at the Arlington Memorial.
A two time Breast Cancer survivor, she participated in the Harvard Medical School Nurse's Health Study for over 35 years.
Our sincerest thanks to our extended family, 2 care givers, Linda and Ali, who coaxed and cajoled our mom to keep moving and eating even when she didn't want to. Without their daily companionship, care and understanding she would not have been able to remain in her home and keep her independence, let alone reach 91 and a half years of age.
