Cummings was twelve days shy of her 101st birthday. She is the eldest child born May 9, 1920 to Claire E. (Neldon) Cummings (deceased 1972) and Paul S. Cummings (deceased 1967), both of Santa Monica, CA.

She grew up and graduated from high school in St. Clairsville, Ohio before moving to Follansbee, WV. The beginning of her education was in a one room schoolhouse with a wood burning stove. She attended a secretarial school in Ohio. She worked in WV as a secretary for a local company. In 1958, along with her parents and younger sister Mary, they moved to Santa Monica, CA by way of the railroad. Her employment in Santa Monica was a secretary for the vice president of an airline manufacturer of small planes with an airport. She lived in Santa Monica until 1996 when she and her younger sister moved to Oceanside, CA. Dorothy enjoyed daily gardening of numerous rose bushes, gardenias and many exotic flowers during her time in California. Also, she enjoyed spending time with friends and family, and doting on her dogs. She voted at every opportunity since becoming eligible.

She is preceded in death by her younger twin siblings, Mary L. Cummings (deceased 1997) of Oceanside, CA, and Paul R. Cummings (deceased 1990) and his wife, Jacqueline M. (Brayley) Cummings (deceased 2018) both of Toronto, Ohio. Dorothy leaves behind her brother Paul's two daughters, Patricia A. Cummings-Bishop and her husband Greg M.
