Doris Dushane Belt, teacher, hospice volunteer, lawyer died April 4, 2010, at age 94. She is survived by her husband John Robert "Bob" Belt, daughter and son in law Barbara Belt and Paul Erb of Seabrook, TX, daughter Laura Belt of Vashon, WA, and AFS daughter Flora Scremin Truite and her family, of Curitba, Brazil. The common theme throughout Doris's life was a dedication to serving others, through the church, through teaching and through her volunteer work.
She was raised in Baltimore, graduating from Forest Park High School in 1933, and from the University of Maryland in 1946. While teaching at Baltimore Business College, she attended University of Maryland Law School, passing the Maryland Bar Exam in 1950. She married her high school classmate, John Robert "Bob" Belt in 1953. After practicing law for a short while, she moved to Severna Park and returned to her preferred profession, teaching, first at night school at Severna Park High School and then at Severn School. During this time she was very involved with Presbyterian youth conferences and counseling troubled youth, and later with the AFS student exchange program, serving as a host mother, arranging activities for students, and helping to place exchange students with host families. After her retirement from Severn School, she attended Anne Arundel Community College, and earned an AA degree in Human Services in 1984. She began using her new skills as a volunteer for Hospice of the Chesapeake, providing support and relief for families caring for dying loved ones.
During her life, she enjoyed animals, and was often happiest with a cat curled up in her lap. She also enjoyed sailing with her family, playing bridge, and reading. She was a devoted member of Woods Memorial Church, and in 1998 coauthored a history of the church with her husband. She served in multiple capacities at the church, as elder, deacon, and president of the Women's Association. In 2000 she was honored with a lifetime membership from the Presbyterian Women of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
Memorial donations may be made in Doris's name to Woods Memorial Church or Hospice of the Chesapeake. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 8 at 1:00 pm at at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, 611 B & A Blvd, Severna Park, MD.
