Mr. Donald K Walter was named acting director of the Energy from Municipal Waste Division with the office of renewal technology in January 1982. In this position, he is responsible for Department of Energy programs of research in the productive use of municipal waste to produce energy and the reduction of energy use in wastewater and water treatment. He managed research efforts that cover a broad range of technologic and institutional matters, to include the thermal and biochemical production of liquid and gaseous fuels, environmental control and risk issues concerned with a to energy systems.

He has been associated with the Federal program to produce or conserve energy since he joined the Energy Research and Development Organization (ERDA) in 1975, ERDA was merged into in1977. During this entire period, he has been a Branch Chief or higher. Prior to that he was City Engineer, Annapolis, MD, where he was responsible for all engineering functions and also served at the Deputy Director of Public Works. He retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1973. His broad range of Army experience includes 8 years in various public works positions, to include two as facility Engineer, Fort Dietrick , MD when the post was being converted from a Biological Warfare Center into facilities for the National Cancer Institute and Army Medical Corps research.

In 1973, Mr. Walter was awarded the Legion of Merit by the U.S. Army. In 1975m he received a commendation from the Mayor and Alderman of the city of Annapolis.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering with the First Honors from Drexel Institute of Technology in 1953. He received a Master of Science Degree from Drexel University in 1966. He holds several academic honors. He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Tan Beta Pi and Chi Epsilon fraternities.

Mr. Walter leaves his daughter, Debbie, grandchildren Kory and Katie Willey. He has 1 nephew, David Walter and 2 nieces Linda and Barbara Laing.

He is greatly missed by all.
