Retired Major Donald E. Hemmick of Millersville, Maryland passed away on March 25th, 2023. He was 88 years of age.

Major Hemmick began his military career as a Private in the Indiana National Guard 38th Infantry Division in 1949. He entered the Air Force in February 1952 and rose to the rank of Technical Sergeant. In June 1966 he received a direct commission as a First Lieutenant. His continental US service included assignments at Lackland AFB, TX, Cheyenne AFB, WY Robins AFB, GA, Condon AFS, OR, Hamilton AFB, CA, Travis AFB, CA, McClelland AFB, CA, and Maxwell AFB AL. Overseas service included tours at Ramstein AFB, Germany, Etain AB, France, Torrejon AFB, Spain, Lajes Field the Azores Portugal.

Major Hemmick's awards and medals include; Meritorious Service Medal with 3 Devices, AF Commendation Medal, AF Achievement Medal, AF Outstanding Unit Award with 3 devices, AF Organizational Excellence Award, Good Conduct Medal with 3 devices, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Berlin), AF Overseas Ribbon, AF Longevity Service Award Ribbon with 5 devices, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon.

While in the Air Force, Major Hemmick completed a Bachelor of Business and Management degree from the University of Maryland, Squadron Officer's School, and numerous professional military training courses.

He retired from the Air Force at Maxwell AFB, AL in September 1983 after 34 years of service.

After retiring, he was employed by Space System/Loral as the Software and Systems Assurance Manager. He was instrumental in successfully transitioning the company MIL-Q Quality Program to the International ISO 9001 Quality Management Standard.

Major Hemmick is preceded in death by his father Donald A. Hemmick and his mother Mary Hemmick. He is also preceded in death by his wife Margaret of 54 years. He is survived by his son Rob Hemmick, and three daughters Maura E. Basanty, Christiane D. Hemmick, and Cynthia L. Wiegand; 13 grandchildren and a sister, Janice K. Tucker of Nebraska.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday April 21, 2023 at 11:00am at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Highway Severna Park MD 21146, interment with full military honors to follow at 1:00pm at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery Crownsville, 1122 Sunrise Beach Rd Crownsville MD 21032.
