Donald W. Fairhurst, 78, a resident of Severna Park, passed away on July 27, 2015, at his home.
He was born in Forest Hills, NY, and lived all over the place until 1950. Then they moved back to Forest Hills. He graduated from Forest Hills High School and went to Adelphi College, where he graduated cum laude in 1958. While in high school, Donald started to learn the pipes, and in 1960, he joined the Amityville Pipe Band. A few years later, he was a founding member of the Gleneagle Highlanders of Babylon, NY.
In 1963, Donald married Nancy Berrigan and in 1966 they moved to Laurel, MD, because he had been hired by the National Security Agency. He stayed with them until he retired in 1994. They moved to Severna Park in 1967. Donald had joined the Washington Scottish Pipe Band in 1967 as a piper. He caught severe pneumonia in 1978, and because he couldn't play the pipes after that, he was made a Drum Major, which he remained for 27 years.
Donald was granted a coat of arms and crest by the College of Arms of the Queen's Household in 1976.
His hobbies were reading, music, photography, and pipe smoking.
A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, July 31st at 10 AM in Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville.
