Dolores Joan "Dolly" Sherwood, 59, a special education teacher for 37 years and head of the special education department at Old Mill High School for almost 30 years, died of cancer April 11 at her home in Severna Park.

Mrs. Sherwood was born July 2, 1945, in St. Louis, Mo., and was raised in Maryland where her family relocated in 1947. After graduating from Catonsville High School, she earned a bachelor of science degree in political science and then a master's degree in special education from Coppin State University. She also earned an administration certificate for K-12.

After three years of teaching in Baltimore City, she became chairman of the special education department at Lindale Junior High School. She went to Old Mill High School in 1975.

Mrs. Sherwood helped to design - and then taught - after-school drug abuse prevention classes through Western Maryland College. She sponsored and choreographed for the award-wining Old Mill High School pom pom squad for several years, served on the Middle States Commission on Higher Education evaluation committees and was a member of the Instructional Leadership Project.

A member of the Rho chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, since 1982, she was recording secretary and president. She served on the Special Education Task Force Committee and was a member of the negotiation team for the Teachers Association of Anne Arundel County.

A member of Chartwell Golf and Country Club, she served on the social committee and was an active member of the Wine Society and the Ladies Nine Hole Golfers.

She was a member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church and its Woods Choir, the Bible Study Share Group, Club Fidelitas, Christian Women Association and the American Business Women's Association.

She was an avid traveler, painter, baker, singer, gardener and golfer.

Surviving are her husband of 32 years, John A. Sherwood; their daughter, Rachel M. Sherwood of Severna Park; a brother, Robert C. Pascal of Ellicott City; and a sister, Martha J. Burlay of Catonsville.

Visitation is from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and Thursday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, with services at 4 p.m. Friday at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, 611 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd., Severna Park. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1041 Route 3 North, Gambrills, MD 21054.
