Dick L. Bloomquist, 83, longtime resident of Severna Park, MD, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2022. He was born in Pittsburgh, went to Wades Hampton High School, and graduated from Clemson University with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Dick was a retired Navy Civilian Engineer who served nearly 40 years for the Naval Sea Systems Command. His specialty was developing technologies to support the Navy's small, deep ocean submersibles. He retired in 2004, as the Director of Technology Transfer, an office that coordinated the Navy's joint efforts on mini-subs with Japan and our NATO partners.

In 1997, he was recognized as a Fellow in the Marine Technology Society. In 1998, Dick was recognized by Japan's Office of Science and Technology as the Chairman of the US-Japan Marine Facilities Panel. Dick was a 50-year member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Dick was a very active member of the Severn Rivers Lions Club for 34 years. He held a variety of local positions, including 10 years as Chairman of the Eyeglass Committee and President of the Lions Association for Sight and Hearing. He held several positions as a member of the International Association of Lions Club, including Lions Club District 22-A Governor from 2007-2008. In 1998, he was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest award by a local club for service.

Dick enjoyed sailing, biking, blues and jazz music, and most especially Lions Club activities. He was a dedicated Scout Master and Boy Scout volunteer, long-time member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, and loyal Baltimore Ravens fan.

He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Tess Bloomquist; his son, Rhett Bloomquist; daughter, Julie Vogl; stepdaughters, Caren Eclarinal (Philip) and Dori Muldowney (Chris); three grandchildren, Tessa, Nicola and Elise; and his sister, Shirley Hogan (Tim).

A family remembrance will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to the Severn River Lions Club at SRLC, P.O. Box 118, Severna Park, MD 21146.
