Denise Galichet Bourgard passed away peacefully into the arms of her Savior on Monday, November 22, 2010, at Heartlands Assisted Living Community in Severna Park under the care of Hospice of the Chesapeake. Born in Verdun, France to Appoline and Emil Galichet, the family immigrated first to London and then to the United States shortly before World War I. She grew up in Amityville, N.Y. where she was educated in the public schools and served as captain of the Amityville Memorial High School girls basketball team, graduating in 1930. She assisted her mother in managing her hair salon on Broadway, was an assistant in the library at the high school and also worked as a secretary to Homer Ball, Director of Physical Education at Amityville Memorial High School. She married Paul Bourgard on October 2, 1937 and they enjoyed a happy marriage until his death on February 28, 1994. At that time, Denise moved to Maryland to be closer to her family. She had a lifelong love of sports, particularly basketball. She was a gardener, great cook and a gracious hostess to anyone who had the fortune of being a guest in her home. She lived at Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville from 1994-2010 when she moved to Heartlands Assisted Living Community in Severna Park due to declining health. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband and her sister, Alice Fallot. She is survived by two sons, Ronald Bourgard of Bay Harbor Island, FL, Dr. Lawrence D. Bourgard of Odenton, MD; three grandsons, Todd Bourgard of Hampton Bays, N.Y., Ryan Bourgard of Burbank, CA, and Greg Bourgard of Odenton, MD and one great-grandson Corey Bourgard of Hampton Bays, N.Y. A graveside service is planned for Monday, December 6, 2010 11:30 AM at Evergreens Cemetery, Brooklyn, N.Y. Arrangements made by Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home.
