Della Karpeles McKnew, 91, a resident of Severna Park for 8 years died June 22, 2008 of natural causes at Tate Hospice House in Linthicum, MD.

Mrs. McKnew was born on February 17, 1917 in Washington, D.C., where she was also raised. Mrs. McKnew also lived in Laurel, MD for 20 years, Baltimore, MD for 22 years, and Riviera Beach, MD for 15 years, before moving to Severna Park.

Mrs. McKnew attended Central High School in Washington, D.C. followed by Goucher College where she earned her BA degree in 1938. While her husband was fighting in WWII, Mrs. McKnew was a secretary for the Chinese Purchasing Commission. While attending Catholic University Law School from 1950-1954, Mrs. McKnew was a secretary for the Corps of Engineers, department of the Army. She was admitted to the Maryland Bar in 1954. When an opening for a lawyer became available at the Corps, Mrs. McKnew took it. After several years, she became the District Counsel for the Baltimore District for the Corps of Engineers. Later in her career, she was promoted to an Administrative Judge for the Board of Contract appeals in Washington, D.C. She was awarded the Department of the Army's Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 1985, after 37 years of service. She retired to Riviera Beach in 1986 and lived a good life until her short illness. She was a member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park

Mrs. McKnew is survived by her daughter, Rosemary Mayes of Pasadena, MD; her son, Benjamin Preston McKnew III of Pasadena, MD; her brother, Leo Karpeles of Crownsville, MD; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin McKnew, her daughter, Jane Cowan McKnew and her son, John Cliff McKnew.

A visitation will be held at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8. A funeral service will be held at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church on Thursday at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Glen Haven Memorial Park in Glen Burnie, MD. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake 445 Defense Highway Annapolis, MD 21401.
