David Henry Schuur, 73, a resident of Millersville since 1992, died Friday, May 31st at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, after a courageous battle with leukemia. He was born April 20, 1940 in Adrian, Minnesota to Henry and Dorothy (Rabenberg) Schuur. Most of his childhood years were spent in Omaha, Nebraska, where he graduated from Central High School in 1958.
In 1963, David completed the ROTC program at the University of Omaha and received his commission in the United States Air Force, serving as a Missile Launch Officer and Procurement Officer. His tours of duty included assignments in Minot, North Dakota; Shreveport, Louisiana; Bangkok, Thailand; and Dayton, Ohio. In 1967, he earned a Masters degree in Industrial Management from the University of North Dakota.
Upon completing his USAF service in 1977, David was briefly employed as a Quality Control Foreman on an assembly line at the GMC van plant in Pontiac, Michigan. In 1978, he became a Contracting Officer for the United States Navy, first at the Naval Air Test Center in Patuxent River, Maryland and later the Naval Supply Systems Command in Arlington, Virginia and Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. He retired from civil service in 1998.
David was a Freemason, and his hobbies included woodworking and collecting scale model farm tractors. He spent several years as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 420 in Leonardtown, Maryland.
David is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judy Jeannette Swanson Schuur, whom he married in Thurston, Nebraska on September 12, 1964; mother and stepfather, Dorothy and Howard Shouts, of Bloomington, Minnesota; daughter and son-in-law, Belinda Marie and Eric Ryberg, of Manassas, Virginia; daughter-in-law Maria Eugenia Schuur of Lima, Peru; brother, Tom (Dee Dee) Schuur of Omaha, NE; and grandchildren Caelan and Alyssa Ryberg of Manassas and Alexia Schuur of Lima.
David was pre-deceased by his father and stepmother, three sisters, a step-brother, and his son, Daniel David, who died in 2010.
A Graveside ceremony will be held Friday July 12, 2013 at 1:00pm in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery 1122 Sunrise Beach Rd Crownsville, MD
