Darwin D. Atkinson, known by his family and friends as Butch, passed away from kidney failure on March 1, 2026, with his family by his side.

Butch was born on October 21, 1941 in Kingwood, West Virginia. He grew up in Kingwood, and graduated from Salem College. In May of 1966, he married the love of his life, Elaine. After 30 years of service to the Federal Government, he retired from the Inspector General’s Office for the Federal Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Throughout his life he lived in Washington D.C., and Bowie MD, before he settled in Winchester on the Severn in Annapolis.

Butch had a great love for the Chesapeake Bay. He enjoyed boating, playing golf, spending time with his grandsons, and attending their Lacrosse games. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Club and the Moose Club.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elaine Atkinson of Annapolis, MD; his daughter Sonya Atkinson Beck of Stevensville, MD (Barry and 5 stepchildren and 7 grandchildren), his son Troy Atkinson (Hilary) of Annapolis , MD; and their sons Ryan Atkinson (Mida) of Champagne, IL and Ben Atkinson (Maggie) of Annapolis, MD.

Family and friends may visit on Friday March 6, 2026 from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00 pm at Barranco Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway Severna Park, MD 21146. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home the following day, Saturday March 7, 2026 at 11:00am.
