Daniel O. Layton, born September 4, 1941 in Washington, D.C., passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 84. He was a devoted family man, respected engineer, and dedicated public servant.

Daniel dedicated his career to public service as a Civil Engineer and licensed Professional Engineer. He retired from Prince George's County after many years of distinguished service and then served the City of Bowie as Assistant Director of Public Works. Throughout his career, he was respected for his expertise, leadership, and commitment to improving the communities he served.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Karen Layton; his parents, Daniel O. Layton and Alice Rayzelle Layton; and his sister, Evelyn Layton.

He is survived by his brother, Rusty Layton; his daughters, Laura Layton, Kathleen Nutter (Phil Nutter), and Sara Fretwell (Jeff Fretwell); and his cherished grandchildren, Emily, Madison, Zachary, Ella, Graham, and Miles. He was also a proud uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Daniel found his greatest joy on or near the water. He loved crabbing, boating, and spending time at the beach. Family gatherings were among his greatest pleasures, and he was happiest when surrounded by those he loved. He was well known for hosting memorable crab feasts and annual Virgo birthday celebrations that brought family and friends together year after year.

His creativity and enthusiasm were perhaps most visible during the Christmas season, when his award-winning musical light displays transformed his home into a beloved neighborhood tradition. He personally designed and orchestrated the shows, delighting visitors of all ages. He also enjoyed gardening, proudly tending his banana plants, and spending many peaceful hours birdwatching.

Daniel will be remembered for his generous spirit, dedication to his family and community, and the many traditions and memories he created that will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Family and friends may visit on Monday July 20, 2026 from 9:30am-11:00am with a service to follow at 11:00am at Barranco Severna Park Funeral Home & Cremation Care, P.A. 495 Ritchie Hwy Severna Park, MD 21146. Interment at Lakemont Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
