Daniel “Dan” Hering Sr., age 65, of Maryland, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2026, in Annapolis, Maryland. Born on May 2, 1960, in Columbus, Ohio, Dan was raised in Severna Park, Maryland, where he built lifelong friendships and memories that shaped the man so many came to love.

After graduating from Severna Park High School, Dan went on to become a Journeyman Operating Engineer, certified by the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council and sponsored by the Operating Engineers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee of Local 37 while also serving as a reservist in the United States Army for four years as a Combat Engineer, achieving the rank of Specialist 4 with the 121st.

Dan devoted 17 years of service to the Maryland State Highway Administration, where he made a lasting and statewide impact on commercial driver training and roadway safety. Upon joining the agency, Dan established the State of Maryland’s CDL training program from the ground up. At the time, no training materials or curriculum existed. Dan wrote the CDL handbook, developed the instructional content, and defined what would be taught and tested. He served as the sole trainer, traveling throughout Maryland to teach the program and prepare employees to successfully pass their CDL examinations.

Dan took on a new position within the state, where he played an integral role in the development of the Maryland CHART (Coordinated Highways Action Response Team) program. Beginning in 1990, he helped establish program documentation, served on the incident response team, and was responsible for on-scene reporting and ensuring roadways were reopened safely and as quickly as possible, always prioritizing public and responder safety.Following his time with the state, Dan co-founded H&H Services with his son Khris, marking the beginning of a proud chapter working alongside family. He later continued working with his son's excavating company and concluded his career doing what he loved most—providing CDL training and helping others succeed.

Dan shared a loving life with his wife of 42 years, Paige Marshall-Hering, and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his children: Daniel Hering Jr., partner Johanna Rodriguez, and children Natalie and Forrest of Washington, D.C.; Khristofer Hering, wife Rachel Hering, and their son Khristofer Joseph of Centreville, Maryland; Blair (Hering) Doran, husband Adam Doran, and their children Ella, Luca, and Gia of Stevensville, Maryland; and Garritt Hering, partner Molly Lassen, and their children Garritt Robert and James of Chester, Maryland.

He is also survived by his brothers, Anthony Hering III and wife Colleen Hering of Allen, Texas, and William Hering, wife Denise Hering and their children Kimberly and Jamie of Federalsburg, Maryland. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony Joseph Hering and Ann Elizabeth Hering of Secretary, Maryland.

Dan will be remembered as warm, outgoing, and genuinely caring, always taking the time to ask how others were doing. He was quick-witted, thoughtful, and had a way of making everyone feel welcome. Dan took great pride in his family, especially his grandchildren, who were his greatest joy. He was a devoted and active father, always present for his children, whether cheering from the sidelines at sporting events, taking them fishing and hunting, or simply spending time together.

As his children grew into adulthood, he continued to cherish time with them and his grandchildren whenever he could. Growing up, Dan was a “second dad” to many, affectionately known as “LT,” and he knew his children’s friends as well as his own. He also shared a special bond with the family’s chocolate lab, Toast “TT” Hering, who was often by his side on early morning walks and remained a constant companion until her passing. He loved spending time outdoors fishing, hunting, gardening and golfing, and he found happiness in the simple moments spent with the people he loved.

Dan’s memory will live on through the stories shared, the lessons taught, and the love he gave so freely. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and family that will continue to be felt for generations. He will be missed immensely.
