Commander R. Carleton Greene, US Navy (Ret) and a Navy "Mustang", 92, a resident of Severna Park, died on March 8, 2011 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis.

He was born and raised in Avon, New York. Following his graduation from Avon High School, he embarked on a career in electronics. At the onset of WW II, Carleton Greene enlisted in the Navy, was rapidly promoted to Warrant Officer, and taught radar courses to the Royal Air Force and US Military in a secret school in Clinton, Ontario, Canada. There he met his wife to be of 44 years, Grace Catherine Hellyar. Carleton was promoted to Ensign, and moved to Corpus Christi, TX where he married Grace. He spent nearly all of the war on a variety of South Pacific islands (Eniwetok, Tinian, and others), directing electronic maintenance teams for US Naval aircraft.
Following the war, Commander and Mrs. Greene moved back to upstate New York where he was instrumental in starting up several radio stations, serving as Chief Engineer and later General Manager of WGVA in Geneva, NY. His reserve Navy career spanned 28 years. He later worked for Electronics Research Inc. of Evansville, Indiana, designing directional FM antenna systems for radio stations all over the United States.
He was a member of St. Martin's-in-the-Field Episcopal Church, a former member of Zion Episcopal Church in Avon, NY, a member of Masonic Lodges in Avon and Geneva, NY, and a very active Ham Radio Operator (W2PWU). He also enjoyed hunting & fishing throughout his native New York State.

His first wife, Grace Catherine Greene passed away in 1986. He remarried in 1993 to Norma Peterson Greene who died in 2007. One of his twin sons, Craig, passed away in 2003.

He is survived by an eldest daughter, Marilyn of Geneva, NY, two other sons, Kirk Greene of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Brenton Greene of Arnold, 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 461 College Pkwy Arnold, MD 21012. Interment will be private.
