Richard Lynch
Retired Maryland Air National Guard Colonel Richard T. "Dick" Lynch, 87, of Chester, died of congestive heart failure Jan. 8 in his home.
Col. Chester was born July 22, 1920, in Baltimore to the late Laura Bourne and Richard T. Lynch Sr. He attended Mount Saint Joseph and the University of Virginia.
Col. Lynch began his military career in 1942, serving with the Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II. He flew 25 missions over Germany, was named a B-26 Flight Leader and was transferred to the 344th Bomb Group, 9th Air Force. He returned to the United States in 1946.
Col. Lynch served with the Maryland Air National Guard as the 135th Tactical Air Support Group Operations Officer, and was appointed Commander of the Unit in late 1957. At the same time, Col. Lynch was named Base Detachment Commander of Harbor Field, Baltimore.
Col. Lynch was awarded the Air Medal with oak leaf cluster, American Campaign Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Europe, Armed Service Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksman Ribbon, Combat Ready Medal, State of Maryland Distinguished Service Cross, and Maryland State 25 Year Service Medal.
He was a member of the Air Force Association, the Bay Pilots Association and was a life member of the Annapolis Yacht Club.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary McGlannan; and his second wife, Pamela Knowlson.
Survivors include one son, Richard T. Lynch III of Glen Burnie; three daughters, Laura M. Lynch of Kimberton, Pa., Carol L. Stob of Round Bay and Louise Wiezie Lynch of Arnold; one sister, Kathryn L. Hilgartner of Timonium; and one granddaughter.
Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 607 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park.
