Col. Alfred "Al" G. Freeberg (USAF Ret.)
Mr. Freeberg died unexpectedly on Thursday July 5, 2012. Son of Arvid and Helen Freeberg, Al was born on February 23, 1947 in New Haven, Connecticut.
An athletic youth, Al spent many summers employed as a life-guard in East Haven, CT. He was an All-State Football linebacker and Captain of his high school football team.
Al attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA. Excellent grades earned him a place on the school Honor Roll and he was voted Captain for both the football and lacrosse teams. Al graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Although accepted into the Naval Officers Candidate program, Al chose to join the USAF as a Lieutenant immediately following graduation.
After being deployed to London in 1975, Al met and subsequently married the love of his life Breda. The couple traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States with the USAF. While stationed in Germany, the Freebergs welcomed a son, and then shortly after their return to the United States in 1981, they were blessed with a daughter.
Al attended the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA where he received a Master's degree in Electronic Warfare Technology. Adding to his impressive credentials, Al also received a second Master's degree in Computer Information Systems from Boston University.
Al served with distinction in numerous jobs with the USAF until his retirement in 2000. These included: Chief, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Infrastructure Division; Deputy Director for Military Support; Deputy Commander,609th Air Intelligence Group; and Chief of Staff, Office of Military Forces.
Al is lovingly remembered by his children for his support in their athletic and educational endeavors, his humor, and his love of gardening and cooking.
Al is preceded in death by his wife Breda.
Survivors include his mother Helen Freeberg of East Haven, CT; son Daniel and daughter Catherine of Annapolis; and brother Rein (Laurel) Freeberg of Hollisten, MA.
Friends may visit on Thursday July 12, 2012 from 4:30-6:30 PM at the Barranco & Sons,P.A Severna Park Funeral Home 495 Ritchie Highway Severna Park, MD 21146. Services will be held on Thursday at 6:30 PM in the funeral home's chapel.
Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
