On, July 6, 2015, Chester Staney, of Severna Park, MD, beloved father, brother and grandfather passed away after a brave battle with cancer with his family by his side. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Nancy Bennett Staney, and his sister Jacqueline Staney.
He is survived by two sisters, four children, ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He will be lovingly remembered by sisters; Virginia Castro-Conroy and Carolyn Crouch, and children; Houston PD Capt. William Staney (Caron) of Kingwood, TX, Susan Fladager (Mark) of Peoria AZ, David Staney (Tina) of Weldon, IL, and Sarah Vermillion (Vernon) of Arnold, MD.
He was born on August 26, 1932, the son of Chester and Viola Sembiante Staney. After graduating from Jeannette, PA High School in June, 1950, he enlisted in the Army. He served in the Army Security Agency in the US and Germany. After his discharge in 1953, he used the Korean War Bill of Rights to enroll in Penn State. During his first month on campus he met the love of his life, Nancy Bennett. They were married after Nancy's graduation in 1954. Nancy passed away after a lengthy illness in the loving care of Chester, in 1996 after 42 years of marriage.
Chester graduated from Penn State in January 1957 and began a 36 year career at the National Security Agency. Initially he served as a cryptanalyst and computer programmer, and later served as a manager.
He was an avid fan of the Orioles, and Steelers, as well as any of his grandchildren's teams. He was a brilliant mathematician, enjoyed gardening and reading, but will be most lovingly remembered by friends and family for his way with words. His stories and wise advice will long be remembered by his family and friends.
Family and friends may visit on Friday, July 10, 2015 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home 495 Ritchie Hwy. Severna Park, MD 21146. A Mass will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at 10:00am in the St. John Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Hwy. Serverna Park, MD 21146. Interment will be at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, MD at a later date.
