Adoring father, loving brother and most fun ever uncle, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, May 9th, succumbing to his years long battle against cancer and the torment that his body had endured.

Charlie was born to proud parents, Frank and Marie Wiles, and was their sixth of a brood that would total seven.  Charlie's childhood in Chillum, Maryland was non-stop fun and activity as he, his siblings and childhood friends sought entertainment in every game imaginable.  Charlie's life would come to be defined by sports as he proved to be a very determined and talented athlete.

Charlie attended both St. John Baptist de la Salle and Holy Redeemer grade schools, where he earned the reputation as an average student, a star little leaguer and a friend who would always be there for his buddies.  Charlie's best athletic days were ahead of him in high school, following in the footsteps of his older brothers Mickey and Terry.  Charlie would not only earn varsity letters in baseball, football and basketball, but make the squad of what is commonly referred to as one of the top ten high school basketball teams of all time, the 1973 DeMatha Stags with a record of 30-1.  Upon graduating from high school, Charlie chose football as the sport to pursue in college, first at Wesley College in Dover, Delaware followed by the Towson State Tigers, where the team finished 9-1 his senior year.  As a testament to his desire to compete, Charlie would use his summer breaks to stay in shape by joining a local Hyattsville boxing club and climb into the ring with semi-professional boxers.

When adult life beckoned with his marriage to Margaret Cosgrove and call to fatherhood, Charlie took a position within the Federal Government where he would work for the majority of his career, first as a Budget Analyst at the Office of the Secretary of the Interior and then completing his career as a civilian within the United States Coast Guard, coincidentally the service branch that his father joined during WWII.  Charlie's career would take him for a stint living and working in Denver, Colorado where he came to really appreciate the outdoors and that skiing was probably not for him.  All along the way, Charlie stayed busy with side jobs he loved such as refereeing club and high school basketball, bartending at his local tavern or picking ponies at the track.  He was always befriending others and accumulating a fan club of people that he would stay connected with his entire life.  His pride and joy however, were his three daughters, Kahlan, Mara and Baby Nancy aka Charlie's Angels.  The Good Lord allowed Charlie the time to walk his daughter Mara down the aisle last summer, an event that made him very happy.

Charlie truly loved being a part of a large, rambunctious family, be it at beach vacations, family golf tournaments or holiday gatherings.  Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, Marie and Frank Wiles and brothers Patrick and Michael Wiles and many other aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is survived by his wife Maggie Wiles, daughters Kahlan, Mara (husband Kevin O'Brien) and Nancy, his brothers Terry (Karen) and Tommy (Mary), his sisters Peggy (Jim) and Annie (Jimmy) and sister-in-law Nancy Rudisill as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

A celebration honoring Charlie's life and memory will be held on Saturday, July 1st, 2-6pm at the DeMatha High School's Antler Room.
