He attended Baltimore City schools before transferring to Randolph Macon Academy in Front Royal, VA, where his father had also graduated. There he met his "Laurie," a local girl, at age sixteen while attending Methodist Youth Fellowship meetings. They married in 1952, had three children and continued to live in the Shenandoah Valley, mostly in the Warren County, VA area but also in West Virginia. The family moved to the Baltimore area in the early 1960's.

An entrepreneur and businessman, Charlie owned and operated livestock feed businesses and a Dairy Queen before moving to Linthicum, MD to work for Marriott Corporation.
