Memorial services were held at noon today at the Naval Academy Columbarium for retired Air Force Lt. Col. Charles D. Van Ry, 71, of Arnold, who died of natural causes Nov. 2 at his home.
Lt. Col. Van Ry was born July 22, 1933, in Hollandale, Minn., and raised in Mason City, Iowa. In 1956 he graduated from the Naval Academy with a degree in electrical engineering. He worked in the Air Force as an aerospace engineer and retired in 1976.
He held several patents in aquaculture and pursued research in marine biology. He enjoyed writing.
Surviving are his wife, Mindy Van Ry; two daughters, Marina Dowdall of Denton and Valerie Wenzel of Denver, Colo.; two sons, Alex and Richard Van Ry of Arnold; and four grandchildren.
