Charles Vernon Spicer, Jr., 82, a resident of Arnold for 45 years, died on February 27, 2011 at home after a brief illness.
He was born on March 19, 1928 in Baltimore and raised in Baltimore City. At the age of 17, he joined the United States Navy and served for 20 years aboard several ships and at various Naval Stations. He retired in 1964 at Glenco Naval Air Station in Brunswick, Georgia. While stationed in Georgia, he was also a member of the Volunteer Fire Department on St. Simons Island, Georgia.
He moved with his family to Maryland in 1965. While in Maryland he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, People's Life Insurance Company, Fawcett Boat Supplies, and later worked as a construction superintendent, from which he retired at the age of 63.
Charles was a member of the Fleet Reserve Club, Branch 24.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Vernon Spicer, Sr. and Margaret Morris Spicer, and a stepmother, Thelma Spicer.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy P. Spicer; one son, Charles Vernon Spicer, III of Arnold; one daughter, Nancy L. Rutledge of Severna Park; son-in-law, Randy Rutledge; and one granddaughter, Rebecca P. Rutledge. He is also survived by a stepbrother, Kenneth Khocel of Florida.
Family and friends may visit on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 from 4-7 pm at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy in Severna Park, Maryland.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at noon at Severna Park United Methodist Church, 731 Benfield Road, Severna Park, Maryland.
Interment will be in MD Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, MD.
