Charles Roy McClung passed away on May 30th, 2022 at 77 years of age in Annapolis, Maryland. He was born November 1st, 1944 in Baltimore, MD to James Roy McClung, of West Virginia, and Anna Rains, of Kentucky. Known as "Charlie" or "Chuck" to close family and friends, he was the oldest of three children. His younger brother, James (Jim) Murray McClung, and sister, Deborah (Debbie) Ann Kilgore, made many memories with him on the water off the North Shore playing, fishing and crabbing.
Charles was a wonderful athlete who played basketball and football, captaining both teams during his education at Brooklyn Park High School (class of 1962). Even at a young age he was a hard worker, beginning with a paper route at 13, and eventually working for ADT at only 16 years old, kicking off a successful 50-year career with the Fortune 500 company. Charles studied at Northeastern College where he graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Accounting.
Charles met the love of his life, Catharine (Cathy) Eileen Luther, in high school and began courting her when he was 21. Fifteen months later, on October 14th, 1967, the two were married surrounded by friends and family at Harundale Presbyterian Church in Glen Burnie, MD. The couple honeymooned in the Poconos and took up residence in Brooklyn Park, but eventually moved to North Reading, MA, where their first and only child, Daniel Roy McClung, arrived in 1981. They spent many happy years on Wagon Drive building friendships with neighbors, coworkers, school and sports friends. Charles was steadfast about handing down his work ethic and athletic abilities to his son, whom he drove to many an early morning sports practice (hockey, baseball, and soccer), and whom he spent many hours working with on home repair projects.
Charles loved music -- particularly oldies and country songs. In his younger years he often moonlit as a DJ, taking on the name, "Skinny Daddy" an ironic homage to his favorite radio DJ, "Fat Daddy." Those who knew and loved Charles remember fondly his sense of humor, his incredible ability to fix anything, and his unwavering loyalty.
Charles moved back to Annapolis, MD in 2003 and retired from his role as a Finance Executive in 2012. He is survived by his wife, Cathy, of Annapolis, MD; his son Dan, of Los Angeles, CA; his brother Jim, of Baltimore, MD; and his sister Debbie and her husband N Keith Kilgore, of Waldorf, MD. He also leaves behind nephews Justin Windholdtz, Steven Gorrick, Jr., and Bradley Kilgore, and nieces Megan Clark, Erin Vaira, Lisa McClung, and Michele McClung.
Family and friends may visit on Tuesday June 7, 2022 from 10:00am-11:00am with a service to follow at 11:00am at Barranco Severna Park Funeral Home & Cremation Care, P.A. 495 Ritchie Hwy. Severna Park, MD 21146. He will be interred at Glen Haven Cemetery following the service to rest next to his parents.
