Baltimore Sun Obituary

Charles Frederick Lynch, chairman of the board of General Ship Repair Corp. and a Severn School benefactor, died of heart failure Monday at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. The Severna Park resident was 81.

Mr. Lynch was born in Baltimore and raised in Severna Park in Anne Arundel County. He graduated from Severn School in 1944 and received a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1948.

He worked for a Baltimore metal-fabrication company before joining the family-owned Key Highway ship repair yard that had been founded by his father, Charles B. Lynch, in 1924.

He served as president of the company from 1958, when his father died. He had has been chairman of the board since 1990.

Mr. Lynch, who was named a Severn School Distinguished Alumnus in 2000, had worked for decades on numerous school projects. He had been a trustee and honorary trustee of the Severna Park coeducational private school.

During the 1970s, he helped with construction of Lynch Field, named for his father, a neighbor of the school and friend of Rolland M. Teel, who had founded Severn School in 1914.

Mr. Lynch was a member of the Propeller Club of Baltimore, the Maryland Marine Club and the Annapolis Yacht Club. He was also a member of the Southern Maryland Society and Chartwell Country Club.

Services will be held at noon Friday at Barranco & Sons Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, the former Ingeborg Mundsperger; three sons, Derick Lynch of Arnold, Cary Lynch of Baltimore and Michael Lynch of Severna Park; a stepson, Gordon Chase of Virginia Beach, Va.; a stepdaughter, Layla Chase Lopez of Mount Airy; a sister, Carol Perry of North Carolina; and nine grandchildren. Two previous marriages ended in divorce.
