Charles Robert Goldschmid Jr., 89, a 20-year resident of Severna Park, and previously of Old Greenwich, Conn. And The Bronx, N.Y., died of esophageal cancer on Jan. 22 at his home after a two month illness.
Mr. Goldschmid was born March 19, 1919 in The Bronx, N.Y., where he was also raised.
He served in the Army Air Corps from 1941-1945, attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He was a navigator on a B-17 and was shot down over Hanover, Germany on his 11th bombing mission. He was subsequently a prisoner of war for two years in Stalag Luft III. He was awarded several medals, including a Purple Heart, an Air Medal, and a POW Medal.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Jeanne Catherine Kolb Goldschmid; and his sister, Bertha "Mutzie" Krenzew.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Goldschmid; three sons, Charles R. Goldschmid III of Tucson, Ariz., Thomas J. Goldschmid of Westminster, Vt., and John Goldschmid of Greenwich, Conn.; one granddaughter, Daedra G. Unsicker of Dummerston, Vt.; and one grandson, Alec Goldschmid of Putney, Vt.
Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, and Sunday, Jan 25, at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, at Woods Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Hwy, Annapolis MD 21401, the SPCA, or the National Cancer Society.
