Charles Duke Case passed away peacefully in his home August 18, 2015, at the age of 86. Duke was born April 7, 1929 in Baltimore, MD, where he grew up in the community of Woodberry, and graduated high school from Baltimore City College in 1947. He attended Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, and upon receiving his B.A. in 1951, enlisted in the Navy. Duke served honorably as a Navy Lieutenant on a Destroyer Minesweeper in the Atlantic during the Korean War. After spending time in Tuscaloosa and Richmond, Duke moved back to Maryland where he began a 20+ year career at The National Security Agency.
Duke was a selfless giver of his time and always put others needs before his. During his retirement he was an integral part of many charitable endeavors such as Operation Welcome Home Maryland, Honor Flight, Pathfinder, Maryland Archives, Florida Audubon Birds of Prey Center, among others. Having been a college lacrosse player, a referee and a coach, he took great pleasure in watching his granddaughters on the field and on the court.
Duke is survived by his wife of 36 years, Jean, and his daughters Cynthia Lopynski (Jerry) of Herndon, VA, Carolyn Burchfield (Alex) of Severna Park, his granddaughters Lindsay, Emily, Anna, Olivia, Lexi, and his former wife and dear friend, Ruth.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, 29 August 2015, from 10 a.m. until noon at Severn United Methodist Church,1215 Old Camp Meade Road, Severn, MD 21144. Refreshments will be provided after the service in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sjogren's Syndrome Foundation, 6707 Democracy Blvd, Suite 325 Bethesda, MD, 20817 or to Fisher House Foundation, 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, MD 20850. A private inurnment service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery.
Duke lived simply, but loved greatly. If you were lucky enough to know him, you were lucky enough to feel his love. For that reason and so many others, he will be dearly missed.
