Carl Holland Hand III, 63, of Millersville, died May 16 at his home after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Hand was born Sept. 23, 1940, in Shelby, N.C., and was the oldest son of the late Carl H. Hand Jr. and Louise Howell Hand.
In 1958 he graduated from Shelby High School and served seven years in the Air Force with tours in Turkey and Japan.
He graduated from the University of Maryland and received a master's degree in international security studies from Georgetown University.
Mr. Hand began a career as a civil servant at the National Security Agency in 1965.
After his retirement in 1995, he pursued a career as an investment advisor for Medallion Investment Services in Severna Park.
He enjoyed collecting first edition books, and had a particular interest in military history. He also enjoyed poetry.
Surviving are his wife, Jeanne Laurenzi Hand, whom he married in 1969; one son, Matthew Holland Hand of Millersville; one brother, Charles Wilson Hand of Greenville, S.C.; and one sister, Nancy Mercier of Shelby, N.C.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, where services will be at 1 p.m. Friday. Burial is private.
